The Azerbaijan carpet Museum was founded in 1967, becoming the first in the world specialized Museum in collecting, preserving and studying the carpet. His first exhibition was opened in 1972 in the Juma mosque on the territory of the ancient fortress of Baku, Icherisheher.

The Museum is the Treasury of Azerbaijan national culture, demonstrating the carpet in close relationship with other forms of traditional art of Azerbaijan. His collection contains about 14,000 carpets, embroideries, clothes, embossed copper articles, items of jewelry, contemporary works of glass, wood, felt.

The Museum is a scientific centre for the study and development of Azerbaijani carpet. He participated in the organization of several major international symposia under the Azerbaijani carpet. The first Symposium was held in Baku under the auspices of UNESCO in 1983. The next three Symposium was held in 1988, 2003 and 2007, the last of which was held in the headquarters of UNESCO in Paris.

In 2008, in accordance with the decree of the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, the construction of a modern building of the carpet Museum, and in August 2014 opened its new exhibition.
