Varna lake is the largest and deepest estuary lake elongated shape along the Bulgarian coast. Lake area - 17 sq km, the depth varies from 9.5 to 19 meters. The origin of this natural reservoir - tectonic.

It is formed from the mouth of the Provadiya river and from the Black sea, the lake separates the two-kilometer sandy strip, which is regularly increasing. The southern coast is steep and high, while the Northern one is flat. The lake bottom is covered with thick layer of silt, in some places reaching 30 meters. In addition, the deepest places of the bottom is covered with sulfurous mud of black color. The lake temperature and level of salinity is largely under the influence of incoming sea water. In the spring the salinity of water on the surface decreases and increases in summer-autumn period. In connection with a predominance of saline water over freshwater, the lake is home to only marine species.

The surface of the water sometimes warms up to +25 °C. the mean Annual surface temperature is about 14 °C at the bottom, the water is heated by no more than +8 °C.

It is known that the area around the lake was inhabited in ancient times, as evidenced by traces of vanished civilizations. On the banks of Varna lake, archaeologists found pile construction, flint tools and canoes. It is also noteworthy that on the North side of the lake, in a modern industrial zone of Varna, in 1919, was accidentally found the famous necropolis, where the excavations are still underway.
