Photos and description

The Potala Palace stands on the Red hill in the Tibetan city of Lhasa and is part of a unique temple complex that has been preserved from the seventh century. The area of the entire architectural complex is 360 thousand square kilometers.

Historical data indicate that the Palace was built by the Tibetan king Songtsen gampo in 637 ad. Obrativshis with Princess Wen Cheng, the king decided to increase the number of rooms in his residence, to dig a canal around the Palace and to build additional towers. However, after numerous civil wars and a fire in the Potala was almost completely destroyed. To date, no change left only cave chögyal Drupal - the place of meditation of king Songtsen gampo.

The restoration of the Palace began in 1645, when the Dalai Lama V was consecrated the construction site. First would be built the White Palace (Karpo Potrang), and later the Red Palace (Potrang Marpo). In winter, the Dalai Lama used the White Palace as a residence and place for solitary meditation. The spiritual leader of Buddhism is no coincidence given the name temple complex. The Potala - Holy mountain, on top of which lives the bodhisattva Chenresi and the Dalai Lama in accordance with Tibetan mythology is his incarnation on earth. In 1959 the Dalai Lama was forced to leave his residence in connection with the invasion of Tibet by Chinese troops. After that, the temple complex has ceased to carry religious importance and became the main attraction for the pilgrimage tourists.

A landmark event for China was the introduction of the Potala Palace in world heritage list of UNESCO. This is because the temple complex is well preserved and carries enormous religious, cultural, and architectural significance.
