National Park Northern Velebit is situated in the North of the mountain chain Velebit. Together with the national Park Paklenica and the Velebit is a single natural complex. A few kilometers from the Northern Velebit is the Adriatic coast. Twenty kilometers to the North of the Park is the town of Senj, and a hundred kilometers South of the city of Zadar.

On the whole territory of Croatia has 8 national parks. Northern Velebit is the youngest of them, it was founded in 1999. The Park covers an area of 109 sq. km the highest peak on the territory of the Park is the mountain of Zavizan, the height of 1676 metres is made.

In the Park mixed in different habitats: there are forests, meadows, rocks, water, etc. they All are in the relationship, because many species of animals that live in the area, used to living different types of terrain.

From the point of view of the layman, it may seem that the landscape is a constant that Park always looked as it looks at the moment. Of course, this is a misconception. The present appearance of the Park the result of natural processes, development of diverse effects, etc. now also continuing the development of the area, the consequences of this development is not always possible to predict, because they depend on a huge number of factors (not only natural).

Today most of the Park is covered by forests (more than 80% of the area). Depending on the height changes, trees, forests can be compared with the straps surrounding mountain Velebit on different sites. If you go from the coast to the mountains, you will reach the beech forest, which forms the border between coastal and inland vegetation. Here you can observe an interesting phenomenon: in the area of beech in the lower part is a curved shape - this is due to the pressure of snow on young trees.

Just above the relict pine forest that remained in this territory since ancient times. They are not common throughout the Park, but only in small patches in several areas.

Among the rocks and live vegetation species are well adapted to such environmental conditions. Most often it is the small animals such as snails, spiders, insects, reptiles and rodents, but there are also larger animals like goats. In addition, rocks are suitable for the weaving of nests of many bird species in the Park.
