Belle

Photos and description

Beli is a village small but truly unique, located on the island of Cres. It is one of the oldest settlements of the Kvarner Islands, the people settled here four thousand years ago. The Beli is located on the rocky shore at an altitude of 130 metres. This location is no accident, it was selected for strategic reasons. In ancient period this place was called Caput insulae - "island head", which became the original name of the settlement Caisole. The current name "Beli" is linked with the time of the Hungarian king Bela IV, who sought refuge here from the Horde of the Tatar invaders.

Here everything points to the rich history of these places: the ruins of the Roman period and remains of the medieval fortifications, Gothic churches, beautiful old balconies and decorated facades inscriptions in Glagolitic on the gravestones. On the hillside there is an interesting place - cemented the area similar to the entrance to the amphitheatre, which is surrounded by stone seats. Here met the villagers in the meetings during the ancient and very brief period of democracy when Beli was an independent municipality of about a thousand years ago.

The village is divided into two parts - Beli on the hill, and Under whites on the coast. Between them laid a pretty steep road, which, however, is quite the road.

In Beli there are several cultural monuments, including: early-Romanesque parish Church with a semicircular apse, preserved several valuable Glagolitic documents, St. Mary's Church with a Museum collection, San Antonio chapel in the local cemetery, prehistoric stables at the entrance to the village, a stone head of king Abel, as well as the famous Roman bridge is the only surviving bridge from the Roman period in the East Adriatic.

Beli is located in the eco centre Caput insulae, which is part of the natural reserve of Kruna. The centre aims to protect the nests of the Griffon vulture and the promotion of ecotourism on the island. In the center is constantly working with multiple exposures, demonstrate the biological diversity of the Islands of Cres and Health of the archipelago. There is also a nursery for injured birds, which can be visited by everyone.
