Abandoned quarries

Photos and description

Abandoned quarries is one of the attractions in Vrsar. In addition to the architectural landmarks the city is full of amazing historical monuments, which can be attributed to an ancient quarry. By the way, it works to this day, but in a slightly different quality.

There is a quarry not far from the Basilica of the blessed virgin Mary. And on top of Havanova that in the East, and the hills to the North-East of Vrsar there is also an abandoned quarry, which produces excellent quality gray stone. By the way, the tomb of the East Gothic king Theodoric the Great (lived in the period from 493 to 526 years) in the Church of Rovinj was built from within the Vrsar stone.

Career around Vrsar and Rovinj were in operation during the reign of the Venetian Republic, but a special value within the Vrsar stone is acquired in the Renaissance and Baroque, and among the Italians. They named it pietra di Orsera, which translates as "within the Vrsar stone."

It is known that the first stone from the quarries of Vrsar was exported in the fourteenth century. Among the first sculptors and builders in Vrsar and Rovinj came the Italians. For example, we can mention the Venetian sculptors Leonardo Tagliapietra or Antonio Rizzo, who lived in the 15th century.

In summer, the quarry serves as a platform for the international school of sculptors. Everything eventually goes out of the hands of masters, remains in Vrsar. Not far from the road to Funtana (a fishing village on the Istrian coast) is a cemetery of the early XX century, near which is a sculpture Park of within the Vrsar stone Dusan Dzamonja.
