The old town Primosten

Photos and description

A few kilometers from šibenik is a small town of Primosten. It was built on the island and has become a safe haven for local residents. To have access to the fields, olive groves and vineyards, the remainder on the mainland, the inhabitants of primošten built a bridge, and then a mound, thus turning a small island into a Peninsula.

In the Old town of primošten, which occupies a hilly Peninsula surrounded by seven small Islands, there is an atmosphere of past centuries. Once on the streets, you can imagine how they lived here people many years ago. Surrounded by medieval fortified walls, the city has retained all the features of Mediterranean settlements. Narrow streets built up with small stone houses, many of which are now restaurants, cafes and taverns.

In the heart of the Old town is the main town Church of St. George, built in the XV century on the highest point of the Peninsula. Several times a three-aisled Church was rebuilt. Near the Church are the bell tower and the old cemetery. In the past the interior of the Church of St. George was adorned with five altars, to the present day survived only two - the St. John's altar and the altar of our lady of Loreto. The oldest local altar dedicated to the patron Saint of the temple - St. George, was destroyed in 1963. From the Church of St. George offers breathtaking views of the sea. There are visible remains of walls Dating back to the seventeenth century. It is possible to descend one of the steep streets running down to the sea.

Around the Old town of primošten stretches a beautiful promenade - a meeting place for residents and tourists. Here you can drink your morning Cup of coffee, enjoying the breeze from the sea, to see friends, to go Jogging, to keep a certain amount in local stores.
