Church. Juraj

Photos and description

The Church of St. George (Juraj) was built in Romano-Gothic style with a semicircular apse. The Church is located in the southwestern part of the settlement of Tucepi near the sea-shore and the resort area.

The Church was built on the foundations of an early Christian Church (V-VI centuries). The first mention of churches in the registry of the existing parish Church dates back to the year 1311. The picture of this Church adorns the city's coat of arms.

Near the Church there is a medieval necropolis. It is also a valuable historical monument, because it is believed the earliest necropolis on the territory of the Makarska Riviera. It is believed that here are buried the Venetian Doge Peter I, who was killed near this place in a sea battle in September 887.
