Zagreb city Museum was founded in 1907. On the ninetieth year of its existence, in 1997, the Museum opened the sixth permanent exhibition, which was first held in the restored and appropriate location, with the use of modern technology. The exhibition presents the history of the city of Zagreb, from prehistory, traces of which were recently discovered under the building of the Museum itself, to the present day.

The combination of tematicheskogo chronological approaches, and the application of contemporary museological and technological principles, has increased the interest of the visitor to the City Museum in Zagreb today. The permanent exhibition gives a portrait of the city in all its aspects, covering politics, Church, history, economy and business, urban planning and architecture, history of art and literature, entertainment and everyday life. Variety of themes and exhibits, which range from rare items to garden supplies, from popular art to give the Museum a special charm. Due to its thematic sequence, the exhibition leads the visitor into the rich life of Zagreb and shows changes in its urban landscape.

The building, which now houses the Museum, was once the monastery of the poor Clares (1650), in and of itself is a historical monument of great importance. During the repair of the premises (1989-1997) archaeologists have conducted additional excavations that brought new information. Therefore, the permanent exhibition starts with the interpretation of archaeological finds, which are presented in the very place where they were found. The Museum presents the prehistoric settlement constructed in the 7th century BC, i.e. the early Iron age, as well as home and Studio culture of the late Iron age.

The Museum features forty-five topics in an interesting, coherent and documented manner. Each period is illustrated with characteristic objects that give the visitor a vivid portrait of Zagreb, starting with the legend about the origin of the name of the city, telling about the life of Medieval Gradec, the various symbols of the city, and ending with the story of the Church.
