The Aswan dam

The Aswan dam is a structure of stone and concrete on the Northern border between Egypt and Sudan. The dam is fed by the waters of the river Nile, and its reservoir forms a lake Nasser.

The construction of the dam began in 1960 and was completed in 1968, but the project was officially opened in 1971, the Reservoir capacity of the Aswan dam - 132 cubic kilometers, it provides water for 33,600 sq km of irrigated land. The dam covers the needs for irrigation of the territories of Egypt and Sudan, prevent floods, generate power, and contributes to the improvement of navigation on the Nile.

The first attempts to harness the waters of the Nile river was undertaken in 1898-1902 year under the leadership of sir William Wilcox was erected dam. Its height has increased two times in 1907-1912 and 1929-1933, in order to protect themselves from floods. But the Aswan dam was too low to control the annual flooding of the Nile. In 1952, a project was developed for the construction of a new dam, which is implemented later. The main purpose of the construction was the management of the flows of the Nile river, which is a source of moisture in almost all of Egypt. The flooding of the Nile happens annually, and most of the water simply flowed into the sea. Using the dam floods were controlled, regulated river flow, water moves in an irrigation system year-round, almost two times increased crop yields.

The undeniable benefits of the dam - transformation for the navigation of the Nile, which contributed to the development of tourism, change of the river depth and the area of the spill gave rise to the formation of the fishing industry. Water from the dam is used for feeding 12 power turbines providing half the energy needs of Egypt. The tank also helps to keep the accumulated water during a drought.

The Aswan high dam is 111 m high, 3830 m in length, its width is nearly 1 km, it is arranged 180 sluice gates. Its economic importance for the country is difficult to overestimate, in addition, the magnitude of the construction puts the Aswan dam in par with such wonders of the world, as the famous pyramids in the desert.

With a wide crest of the dam offers a nice view of lake Nasser and views of the monumental structure.
