The beginning of Savonlinna was a trading settlement at the fortress. City rights it had received in 1639 As a border area between East and West, this area has survived many wars. Olavinlinna castle, founded in 1475 to protect the Eastern border of Sweden, in the course of its history passed from the Swedes and Finns to Russian and back. And it was built alternately one, then the other. In the XVIII century the works were supervised by commander A. V. Suvorov. The fortress and its two museums (Museum of the history of the fortress and the Orthodox Museum) open all year. Olavinlinna is the best preserved military fortification in Northern Europe.
