The heyday of the women's Abbey in Saintes occurred in the XII century, when the monastery had the patronage of Eleanor of Aquitaine, Queen of the French and English. In the XIV century the Abbey came under the direct control of the king of France, at this time the country was ruled by Charles V the Wise. The convent in Saint maintained its significant position in the religious life of France until the French revolution.

The founder of the Abbaye AUX dames in Saintes steel in the middle of the XI century, geoffroi Martel, count of Anjou and his wife Agnes of Burgundy. Abbey Ladies in Saintes became the first female monastery in the area of Saintonge, and centuries later it was recognized as an outstanding example of local varieties of the Romanesque style in architecture. Currently, the monastery is the cultural centre is a Museum dedicated to the history Santonja. In addition, every summer here is held the festival of classical music.
