The temple was built in the second half of the nineteenth century. Its upper part was consecrated in honor of the virgin Mary, but there is also an underground crypt, dedicated to St. Joseph. In place of the current Basilica, the first Church was built in the XII century. Four centuries later it was destroyed by the Huguenots. From that of the temple remained only the chapel, but it is because of disrepair in the first half of the XIX century was demolished and in its place was erected a new chapel. In the middle of XVII century in the chapel citizens of Lyon prayed for deliverance from their plague. Of course, it's hard to say how it helped their prayers, but two centuries later, the grateful descendants of those citizens of Lyon hoisted to the top of the newly built chapels a gilded statue of the virgin and since then, every year on December 8 is carried out in her honour the Festival of lights.

The second time the residents of Lyon appealed to the virgin and prayers for protection in 1870. In France at that time was the Franco-Prussian war, the Prussian army had already occupied Paris. Residents are asked to defend your city from the enemy, standing on the hill of Fourviere, and promised to erect a temple in honor of the patroness of Lyon. In the end, the Prussian army never came to Lyon, and in 1872 began construction of the Basilica, which can now be seen on top of a hill.

The work was done on the donations for several years. The first worship service was held in 1890, and the solemn consecration of the temple took place six years later. Interior decoration of the Basilica, astounding in its magnificence, was only completed in 1964.
