The rosary Basilica and another Church - the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception are the basis of the sanctuaries in Lourdes. Apart from these, the sanctuary also includes a few religious buildings. They were all built around the cave Massabielle - grotto, which in the mid-nineteenth century a young woman named Bernadette Soubirous was the virgin.

The story of Bernadette, who was canonized in the 30-ies of XX century, made Lourdes one of Europe's largest pilgrimage centers. Our lady of Lourdes Shrine annually attracts multimillion-dollar flows of people who seek help, healing or make the pilgrimage in gratitude. Apparition 14-year-old Bernadette was from February to July 1858. The girl told about the 18 events, but the Catholic Church didn't believe her word for it and even checked out Bernadette for the presence of mental disorders. After many inspections she still believed, and the girl herself took the veil.

The complex of sanctuary, in addition to the already mentioned two Basil, also includes the grotto Massabielle, the Church Sainte Bernadette, the underground Basilica of St. Pius X, the area for processions, baths for bathing and a source that are located near the grotto.

Both the Basilica was built in the second half of the nineteenth century: the rosary - in 1889, also called the lower Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in 1871, respectively, called the upper Basilica. Both were built in the rock above the grotto. Temples were built in neo-Byzantine and neo-Gothic styles, their total capacity is 2300 people. Two other temple sanctuary (an underground Basilica and the Church of St. Bernadette) was built in the second half of the XX century, respectively in 1958 and 1988.

The rosary Basilica was built after the flood of pilgrims to Lourdes have increased substantially, and Basilica of the Immaculate Conception no longer accommodate the worshipers. It has become the architect Leopold hardy. When pilgrims became even more, in the sanctuary decided to build another temple and built it under ground.

The facade of the Basilica of the rosary and its interior is decorated with mosaics, which were created at the turn of XIX-XX centuries. They depict scenes from the New Testament, as well as the apparitions of the virgin Mary to Saint Bernadette.
