Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel - one of the Baroque buildings in Menton. Besides this Church, the Baroque style in religious architecture in the city streets represent the chapel of the two Brotherhoods of the penitents - black and white. They were built in the late XVII century. They are all located in the old part of the city, which was also built in the Baroque era. The Basilica is located in the eponymous square, which since the middle of last century the annual festival of classical music.

The temple, consecrated in honor of Archangel Michael, began to build in the first half of the XVII century during the reign of the Prince of Monaco honoré II. The temple was built on the site of the religious buildings of earlier construction. The first stone of the future Church was laid in 1640 and ended with the construction of a few centuries. The architect of the Church was the Genoese Lorenzo Lavagna. Another Prince of Monaco honoré III was crowned in this temple in 1757.

In the nineteenth century were carried out restoration of the facade, after which he changed his appearance - was added to columns of ionic and Corinthian orders. In the niches on the facade you can see the figures of the Archangel Michael and two saints Roch and Mauritius.

At the end of the last century the Church of Archangel Michael received the status of Basilica by Pope John Paul II.

The interior of the Basilica is decorated with frescoes in the Central vault, the large retablo of the XVI century, created by andré Marcello, and the statue of the Archangel Michael carved from wood and painted in the XVIII century. The decoration of the Basilica is very lush: only marble for interior decoration were used 17 shades, and the porch in front of the Basilica a mosaic of black and white pebbles.
