The city walls of van - more than a thousand years, but they are well preserved. The first wall was built in the III century around a fortified Roman settlement, which is now in the Western part of the modern city. In the XIII century the first fortifications were restored, and a hundred years later, the area of the city needed to expand, so he built a new protective wall. This work was carried out by order of the Duke of Brittany Jean IV. In accordance with its plans, the city began to grow in the South. At the same time, the Duke had built for himself the Palace of the Ermine, but he had not survived.

In the XV and XVI centuries, the system of city defence is improving - there are new towers and bastions, other fixtures, such as hanging loopholes. Urban fortification bath can trace the history of the construction of defensive structures, ranging from the Gauls and ending of XVI century. Today inside the city's fortifications can be reached through the gate of St. Vincent or gate Then du Prison, the former city prison of the eighteenth century, or the Calmont gate.

Upper floors accessed by a spiral staircase. The building was intended for the chief of the army of the Duke - constable. The tower is located in the Eastern part of the wall, since 1975 it is the property of the municipality and is open for visits.
