The Botanical garden in Montpellier is one of the oldest in France. It was founded in the late XVI century as a garden of medicinal plants at a local University. A decree on the establishment of such a garden, in which was practiced the future doctors and pharmacists, gave Henry IV, and the implementation of this order were engaged in the botanist Pierre richer de Belleval.

Subsequently, the garden has grown to the size of this garden, in the beginning of XIX century there was built the first greenhouse, and in Montpellier, he began to bring various exotic trees and plants. In the XVII century on the territory of the garden was a bust of the founder, and after a few centuries, there appeared busts of other scientists and sculptures of other researchers - honoured as it turned out, for example, worked here Carl Linnaeus, the Creator of the system of classification of animals and plants. Known the researchers also received a special of the alleys of the garden, which was named after them. One of the alleyways, of course, was dedicated to Pierre richer de Bellvale. The garden is also a monument to the writer Francois Rabelais as one of the most famous students of the University of Montpellier. For several years, he even taught medicine.

In the Botanical garden of Montpellier, with its warm Mediterranean climate, successfully grow tropical and heat-loving plants, and conifers. In the garden you can see the boxwood and palm trees, bougainvillea and Jasmine, arrived from South America, cypresses and lotuses, bamboo and many other plants. For certain types of special conditions: for cacti greenhouse, and irises for the Alpine slide. A special attraction of the garden is a tree with a hollow in which visitors leave notes with wishes.

Currently the garden area is more than four hectares, on which there are more than three thousand species of plants. The Botanical garden is located in the old part of the city and is adjacent to buildings that were built in the Middle ages. The garden has the status of a historical monument since 1922.
