The gate of Le Castillet and Museum Casa Peral: photos, description (Le Castillet)

This building now houses a Museum of Catalan art and folk traditions Casa Peral's Peral"), but in the past, this building served as the city prison, and even earlier - the entrance gate.

In the second half of the XIV century in the North of Perpignan was built watchtower Grand Castillet. It replaced the old outdated defensive plan goal. A new tower was very well fortified and was intended to repel attacks from the French border. But when the French still took Perpignan, a powerful fortress lost all its meaning and was transformed into a prison.

Near Grand Castillet in 1478 was constructed the smaller tower, which was called Petit, Castillet and had no other value except to skip entering the city and leaving it. In the design of the gates was even a drawbridge, is not extant. In a niche above the arch of the gate was a statue of the mother of God, so they very soon became known as the gates of Notre Dame.

Gate and tower Grand Castillet was built of red brick with elements of Moorish style. In the finishing parts of the building used white brick. The upper part of the structure is decorated with the teeth of rectangular shape, is currently at the top of the tower has an observation deck with views of the Canigou mountains and, of course, good visible sights of Perpignan.

The Museum "House of Peral" preserves works of Catalan folklore, sacred art, products of traditional Catalan crafts, as well as household items and tools of their labor.
