In the first half of the XIII century the city of Chambery was annexed to the province of Savoy and became its capital, and the residence of the Dukes of Savoy. The first settlement here appeared in Roman times, but as the city of Chambery grew and flourished, being part of Savoy. It grew around the castle built in the late XIII century by order of the Duke of Savoy. The residence of the Dukes of located in Chambery until the second half of the XVI century, until the capital was moved to Turin.

The location of the residence in Chambery was a pretty important political matter: it is placed in the way by which you can get to Austria from Italy. Now it is a small town located in the mountains near lake Bourget.

Castle of the Dukes of Savoy is one of the most striking sights of the city. It was rebuilt several times, has not yet acquired its present appearance. The castle complex consists of several towers and courtyards, galleries and passages, surrounded by a fortified wall. The building of the castle is decorated with stained glass, and on one of the towers was installed in the bell, a musical instrument, the Carillon, perhaps the largest in Europe. There are 70 bells, and with his help conduct the concerts of bell music. However, they are satisfied in strictly certain days, so as not to interfere with the work of the city Council, which is also located in the castle.

The castle is the temple in which once kept one of the most important religious relic - the shroud of Jesus Christ. The Duke of Savoy became its owner in the middle of the XV century, and then together with the transfer of the capital to Turin, were displaced and heirloom. It is now known as the shroud of Turin, kept in the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, and shows very rarely, about once every quarter century.
