The castle of Sully-sur-Loire is located in the French Department of the Loire.

The castle stands on a strategic location, where once stood the Gallo-Roman Fort. The first mention of the castle is dated to the year 1102. In 1218 the king of France Philip II Augustus, built a donjon to the South of the previously standing structures, the Foundation of which has survived to this day. In 1395, guy de TREMOILLE completed four towers around the main donjon.

In the XVI century the castle passed to the Dukes of Sully, the first representative of which was the Minister of king of France Henry IV, Maximilien Bethune. The castle was quickly rebuilt - for convenience, the Fort was completed the so-called Petit Château "little castle". Its interior has not survived because in the XIX century it was completely replaced with a new one. A separate enclosure that connects the main donjon with a new, small castle was built in the XVIII century and restored after a fire in 1918.

In the XVI century has also expanded the Park and fortified the banks of the Loire river, to protect the neighborhood from flooding.

In 1652, the castle of Sully-sur-Loire during the Fronde princes had taken refuge cardinal Mazarin and the Royal family - Anne of Austria with her son Louis XIV. Also stayed at the hotel Marshal Turenne - just before his victory over the Prince de Conde. In 1716 and 1719, the castle was hidden Voltaire, exiled during the Regency of Philip of Orleans.

In 1918 the castle was a fire, and during the Second world war it was repeatedly bombed.

The castle of Sully-sur-Loire is a monument of architecture and culture of France. Until 1962, it belonged to the genus Sully, and then became the property of the Department of the Loire. The castle was repeatedly subjected to restoration work. Now it is a Museum. Among the exhibits - a series of tapestries, including the six tapestries of the XVII century, representing the story of the ancient legend of psyche. The interior is in keeping with the style of the XVII century, on the walls hang portraits of members of the genus Sully. You can also see the grave of the first Duke of Sully and his wife.
