Carennac: photos, description (Carennac)

Carennac is a beautiful old village in the South of France, region MIDI - Pyrenees. It is included in the Association "Most beautiful villages of France". It is home to only about 400 people.

The town is located on a small plateau in a rich fertile district on the river Dordogne. It should be noted that nearby is the famous sanctuary of Rocamadour, where the miraculous statue of the black Madonna. Also in this region are found many traces of ancient people from Paleolithic times, including several dolmens - cultic burials of the Neolithic period.

The first mention of the settlement Carennac refer to the XI century. Then was built the city's monastery with the main Church of St. Peter, obeying the religious congregations of Cluny Abbey. Church of Romanesque style have been preserved to this day in authentic form. Notably the ornate tympanum, situated above the main entrance to the Cathedral and finished in the XII century. It is supported by ancient columns standing in three groups of four each. Elegant carved figures on a relief in the tympanum depict scenes from the last judgment, and at the center is Jesus Christ. The temple is an imposing structure with three naves, and its North side also is placed a few small chapels.

Especially notable is the cloister of the Cathedral, which is a mixture of two styles - the XII century Romanesque and flamboyant Gothic of the fifteenth century. There is also a Chapter house in one place the Synod Assembly of monks, which now houses the sculptural group of the same era, depicting the situation in the coffin.

On the hill stands a magnificent castle, owned by the city rulers, and built in the late XVI century, but it has kept details typical of medieval fortifications. The Palace consists of four floors and a powerful tower, where lies the main staircase of the building. Especially notable is the white stone facade of the building, supported by columns and decorated with elegant Windows. The interior is decorated with portraits of prominent city politicians and religious leaders and other paintings of the XVIII century. The whole structure is surrounded by an old fortified wall.

In addition, the city has many mansions and rich houses XV-XVI centuries, which gives it a single, unique architectural appearance.
