Père Lachaise is the largest cemetery in Paris. Here lie the remains of famous scientists, writers and artists, military and politicians.

Now Pere-Lachaise - one of the world's most famous burial site. In the middle ages, here, on the outskirts of the capital, lay poor criminal district. Then there appeared a monastery. The land became the property of the Jesuits, one of whom was the Confessor of Louis XIV, françois de La chaise. The name of the cemetery (Pere Lashaise) literally translates as "the father La chaise".

This land was purchased by the city in 1804. First, people wanted to bury their relatives out in the boonies. The authorities took the unusual step: here reburied the remains of La Fontaine, Moliere, Abelard and his student Eloisa. It gave results - the cemetery became prestigious.

In 1814, anti-Napoleonic coalition troops entered Paris. The youth tried barricades to block their way. At Pere-Lachaise Russian resisted the cadets of the military school. Cossacks perekolol them with bayonets and made the cemetery their camp.
