Museum of Gustave Flaubert and history of medicine: photos, description (Musee Flaubert et d'histoire de la medecine)

The famous writer Gustave Flaubert was born in Rouen on 12 December 1821 in the family of the surgeon. His mother also came from a medical family, so no other way, as in medicine, the young Flaubert was not. So decided for him by his father who was passionate about his profession and wanted the son continued his work and devoted his life to medicine.

However, Flaubert himself thought otherwise and went against the will of the father. As a student of the Royal College, he, along with Ernest Chevalier, he founded the first edition, which was called "Art and progress", and published their first literary work. Later, Flaubert studied in Paris at the faculty of law, but soon dropped out and lived only a literary work. The famous writer brought the novel "Madame Bovary," published in 1856, when Flaubert was 35 years old.

My father's house in Rouen, where Gustave Flaubert was born and spent few years of his life, was turned into a Museum, one part of which is devoted to the biography and work of the writer and the other the occupation of his father, medicine of XVIII-XIX centuries.

The creators of the Museum tried to keep the original interior and atmosphere of the house, which was built in the XVIII century. Museum exhibits have become writing writer, manuscripts, furniture, paintings, decorated the family life of Flaubert. All of these things remember not only the family and the writer, but his guests and colleagues, guy de Maupassant, George sand, brothers Jules and Edmond Goncourt.

In the medical part of the Museum presents surgical instruments, Apothecary scales and containers for medicines, plaster casts of human body parts. One of the most interesting exhibits is the obstetric simulator - birthing machine that helped train future midwives the science of obstetrics.
