Museum of the middle Ages: photos, description (Musee national du Moyen Age)

The Paris Museum of the middle Ages, located in the heart of the Latin quarter, briefly referred to as the Cluny Museum. The reason is simple: it is housed in the mansion of Cluny . Part of the mansion of the XV century baths of Cluny are the ruins of the bath complex of the Gallo-Roman era.

Compound in a Museum such different eras reflects the building's history: the mansion is descended from the Roman baths of the II-III centuries on the foundations which were built at the monastery. Actually the mansion of Cluny was attached to the monastery in the XIV century. It is a striking example of civil architecture of medieval Paris, it is possible to find elements of Gothic and Renaissance.

Initially, the mansion was part of the buildings of the College Cluniac. Its present appearance it gained about 1500. After the death of Louis XII lived here his widow Mary Tudor, then the future cardinal Mazarin. During the revolution the building was confiscated by the state. Gothic chapel settled here, the doctor dissected corpses. In 1833 the collector Alexander du Sommer posted here the collection of curiosities of the middle Ages and the Renaissance. After his death the collection was bought by the state. Son du Sommer became the first Keeper formed of a Museum.

Today there are exhibited the sculptures of the XII-XIII centuries, tapestries, stained glass, miniatures, medieval life. Exhibited sculpture with a tragic story. During the revolution, the Cathedral Notre Dame de Paris was closed, Robespierre beheaded statues of old Testament kings from the façade of the Cathedral. The heads of the kings is found only in 1978 when repairing the Bank of foreign trade. The year before was found and the stone body.
