The Parc des Buttes Chaumont: photo description (Parc des Buttes-Chaumont)

The Parc des Buttes Chaumont is the third largest in Paris and the romantic. And is a stunning example of what can turn a godforsaken place if there is political will.

The name of the Park translates as "Bald mountain" - on this hill from time immemorial, nothing much grew because of the clayey soil. Mined gypsum and limestone in the quarries, stood the gallows - they used to execute convicted criminals. By the mid-nineteenth century, here began to bring their garbage and dead horses, formed a huge stinking dump.

Napoleon III, the great transformer of Paris, decided to transform a horrible place into a beautiful Park. The state bought the land, and in 1864 under the direction of the prefect Baron Haussmann began work. Thousands of workers labored here for three years, to implement the plans of the engineer Jean-Charles al, the gardener Jean-Pierre, Baria-Deschamps and architect Gabriel Davy. Hundreds of horses and 450 wagons took out the garbage and brought building materials (specially built 39 miles of railroad track). Two hundred thousand cubic meters of fertile soil needed for large-scale landscaping of bald mountain.

The Park was opened on 1 April 1867 - world's fair. Admiring visitors saw something unimaginable here before. A huge space of 25 hectares included several English and Chinese gardens, a lake, grotto, waterfall, rocks in the hills with big elevation changes. Later on the island in the middle of the lake there is a "temple of the sibyl" - the Belvedere, created by Gabriel Davy on the model of the temple of Vesta in Tivoli. To him were two of the bridge hanging and stone, because of its height called the suicide bridge.

All of this is preserved to this day. Added paved roads and paths, two of the puppet theatre, three restaurants. Only Park, 12 hectares of lawns, 6 acres of flower plantations, a great variety of trees - plane trees, lindens, maples, giant sequoias, beech, pear, alder, Ginkgo, black pine, Sophora. Floating black swans, ducks, geese, seagulls cry, jerking their tails Wagtails. The water is so clean that it is home to pike, tench, roach, minnows - you can buy a license and fish, and you can rent a boat and just ride around the lake. Modern improvement has not taken away from the Park of romance: the same steep slopes as the noise of the waterfall in the grotto, as well are breathtaking on the bridge and temple of the sibyl, with beautiful views.

And to think that it was a dump!
