The Sayan: photos, description (Seillans)

The Sayan is a picturesque old village on the South-East of France located in the Provence - Alpes - côte d'azur. It is included in the Association "Most beautiful villages of France". It is home to more than 2,000 people.

The town is located on top of a hill which is quite steep. The highest altitude here reaches 1303 meters above sea level. You can say that and streets of the settlements are on different levels and therefore are narrow and winding. At the top stands the medieval castle of the XI century Cathedral. There are amazing views of the var valley and other miniature villages.

The town has preserved many authentic buildings, attracting both tourists and the French who decided to rent a house here for the summer. It is known that in 60-70 years, there lived a pair of avant-garde artists - Max Ernst and Dorothea Tanning. Since the city houses a collection of works by max Ernst, some of his sculptures exhibited in the open air, like sculpture-totem, "the Genius of the Bastille" located in the center of the square of the Republic.

The Sayan is located in a very picturesque place - surrounded by vineyards, olive trees and a tiny chapel, hidden in small groves. A little away is the lake Saint-Cassien. However, one can argue that the Sayan is far from civilization - distance to the larger resort of nice is about 40-50 kilometers.

Among the main attractions worth noting the Church of Saint-léger, built in the XI century. Especially interesting is its interior - here are the altar image of the XVI-XVII centuries and several paintings of the XVIII-XIX centuries. And two kilometers from the Sayan stands the chapel of the blessed virgin Mary, which houses the miraculous sculpture of the altar, which is considered one of the main Provencal sites.

Every year the city hosts fair pottery, colorful festivals and music concerts, when the two weeks directly into the streets of the city performed as classical works, and enchanting melodies of jazz.
