The Cathedral of Lille is named in honor of our lady of the vines - her statue, made in the thirteenth century, stored there. The very virgin Mary de La Treille in the XVII century the inhabitants of Lille declared patroness of the city, and established in her honor holiday, which is celebrated on October 28.

The statue of the virgin kept in the Cathedral of St. Peter, but it was destroyed for the first time in XIV century, then in the great French revolution. By the way, the statue is also exposed to destruction, but the townspeople found a way to restore it. A temporary shelter for the bright image was the Church of St. Catherine.

In the XIX century the local priest Charles Bernard Lille, with the support of Industrialists decided to build a new Church, which was a worthy "home" for the image of the heavenly patroness of the city. In the announced competition was considered more than forty projects, but won the option proposed by a local architect Charles Leroy. Construction was started in 1854, and major work was completed by 1872. However, the work was continued at the end of the twentieth century, initiated by our predecessor completed modern architects: engineer Peter rice, and architect Pierre-Louis Carlier.

As a result, the building of the Cathedral is a harmonious combination of neogothic style and modern materials - metal fasteners that adorn the Central arch of the facade. Its height is 30 meters. The arch is lined with white marble and crowned with a round stained glass window, depicting several biblical scenes. The Northern and southern portals of the temple are decorated with several sculptures. Inside the Cathedral is richly decorated with mosaic and stained glass paintings. Under the Cathedral crypt, where were buried the bishops of Lille and some prominent citizens.

Next to the main building of the temple is the bell tower, the building height of nearly 100 meters, which is visible from different districts of Lille.
