Sauveterre-de-Rouergue: photo, description, (Sauveterre-de-Rouergue)

Sauveterre-de-Rouergue is a beautiful old village in the South of France, region MIDI - Pyrenees. It is included in the Association "Most beautiful villages of France". Now it is home to almost 800 people. The nearest large settlement - of Rodez is 30 kilometres. The city is on a hill and its altitude ranges from 300 to 680 metres above sea level.

Sauveterre is a Bastide, a fortified settlement that exceeds the size of the village, but falls short of the title city. This type of settlement was common in the South of France in the XIII century, when after the Crusade against the Albigenses the counts of Toulouse was forbidden to build a well fortified large city. Sauveterre was founded in 1281 by decree of the king of France Philip III the Bold, and in 1301 there appeared a Royal mission, which greatly increased the prestige of the city. However, with the decline of the middle Ages began and the decline of the settlement. In XVI-XVII centuries Sauveterre suffered from epidemics of plague, and in its economic development lost more fortunate neighboring cities. Only in the late XX - early XXI century the local authorities remembered the village, and with their help, Sauveterre has been restored in its original form.

The main attraction of the town is the Church of St. Christopher. Interestingly, the first Church built in 1313, served as the city gate, and only in 1388 at the present place was erected a modern building. Relics of Saint Christopher were brought to the city a certain merchant from Montpellier in 1384. The Cathedral was built in Gothic style yuzhnofrantsuzskom. The interior of the Church is not much pomp. It is worth noting the carved benches of the XVI century, the image of the altar of the XVII century and the pulpit made of walnut wood of the XVIII century.

In the city there are many other old stone and wooden houses, as well as the market square, decorated cloisters. Now Sauveterre is especially popular among artists. Every year there are several musical concerts and cultural festivals.
