In Poitiers there is a local legend connected with the Church of Notre Dame La Grande. According to her, in the beginning of the XIII century, a city official decided to commit treason - surrender of the English troops besieging Poitiers, the keys of the city gates. He was almost executed plans, but the right time hadn't found the keys in their usual place. The mayor of Poitiers, who learned about the missing keys and suggested about plotting treason, decided to pray in this Church and saw the keys in the hand of the statue of the virgin Mary. The same legend says that the virgin and saints Hilary and Radegunda appeared to the English, and routed them. All these stories are reflected in the decoration of the Church - so, in the XIX century in its interior, there was a statue of the virgin Mary with the keys and stained glass, on which the heavenly patrons of Poitiers draw the enemy to flight.

At the end of XX century the Church had launched a large-scale restoration campaign, and in 1995 restored the façade was inaugurated in a solemn ceremony.

The first evidence of the existence of the Church Notre-Dame-La-Grande date back to X century, but one wall, traces of a more ancient masonry.
