Cathedral of St. Kilian was built in the XI-XII centuries on the burial place of the Irish monk Kilian became the patron Saint of würzburg and wine-making. Now the relics of this Saint are kept in the crypt of the nearby New Cathedral.

This Cathedral is the fourth largest Romanesque Church in Germany and its plain exterior appearance in stark contrast with the lush interior decoration in the Baroque style. In the North aisle are the tombs of bishops, whose gravestones were made by the sculptor Tilman Rimensnyder. At the end of the North transept there is a chapel, built by the architect Balthasar Neumanna for bishops Shenborn.
