St. George Church is one of the twelve Basil Cologne, who stand out for their performance in the Romanesque architectural style and are attracted by its beautiful and impressive appearance of a large number of visitors and parishioners. During the reign of the city of the emperors of the Roman Empire it housed only a lookout tower. It monitored important road in the city of Bonn, passing through the southern gates of Cologne.

Work on the construction of a three-aisled Basilica began in the XI century during the reign of Archbishop Anno II. It was planned to create a Church with a transept and choir in the East and the West. In the middle of the XII century the Basilica was supplemented by some details, was built cross vaults of the choir. The walls were painted by the craftsmen of the town, some of the frescoes have survived to the present time.

Especially well-preserved capitals shaped like bowls, located in 22 columns. Work on them was carried out at the end of the XII century, their recess engaged by the Cologne master Samson. In that time, many churches were rebuilt and changed its architectural style, the Basilica of St. George is among those that have remained in its original form until the end of the Second world war. Of course, she failed to avoid damage restoration work subsequently continued for 60 years.

In the lateral niches, located in the Western choir, you can see statues of wood depicting the apostles Peter and Paul. Period of their creation is considered of the eighteenth century, presumably they belonged to the elements of the altar made in Baroque style. On the wall of the side nave on the South side of the Church you can see the amazing mosaic of the virgin Mary with Baby made by Johann Priceroom.
