The Holstentor city gate is located on the island. They were built by Henrico Helmstedt 1466-1478 in the Flemish project. This building with two massive round towers, is the symbol of lübeck. In the towers of the gate is the Museum of city history.

At the other end of the Old city are another gate - Burgtor. They were built a bit earlier, in 1444. The final part of the Baroque gate was built much later, in 1685. Five floors of the tower are decorated with identical rows of Windows, but different. Through these gates ran the only land entrance to Lubeck.
