Theatrical productions in pécs began to be rooted in the early 19th century in German and Hungarian. In the absence of one of the theater they were usually held in large dance halls and hotels. Thus, production trekked up to 1840. when Mary street was built the first theater. However, half a century later it was destroyed, to the present time from this building, leaving only memories and a sketch of the facade.

To meet the cultural demand of the public, the city Council established a Committee headed by the mayor Janos Atingiram to coordinate the planning of the new theater project. The competition was held in 1890. It was won by Adolf lang and Adolf Steinhardt, who were given 10 000 HUF for the project. Premiere in the new theatre took place on 5 October 1895.

After the deterioration of the building in 1986 began a 5-year reconstruction, which resulted in the theater got a modern orchestra pit and modern technical equipment.
