The national monument is the pylon, which is in the middle of Medan Merdeka Freedom square, Central Jakarta. The height of the pylon reaches 132 metres, and the pylon is a symbol of the struggle for independence of Indonesia was built to commemorate those who died in this struggle.

The construction of this Grand monument was started in 1961 on the orders of President Sukarno of Indonesia. Sukarno was President of Indonesia from 1945 to 1967. It should be noted that President Sukarno was awarded the honorary title "national hero of Indonesia", the title of which is given by the government of Indonesia for his service in the struggle for independence and the development of the Indonesian state. The public opening of the monument took place in 1975. The top of the monument is a flame and made of gold leaf.

The construction of the monument occurred in three stages. The first phase lasted from 1961 to 1965. In August 1961, President Sukarno laid at an official ceremony the first pile of the monument. Just for the base of this monument were scored 284 reinforced concrete piles and for the construction of the Foundation of the Museum was used 360 piles. Work on the Foundation was completed in March 1962 and in October was completed the walls of the Museum. After it began construction of the obelisk, from which he graduated in August 1963. Following the construction phase (1966-1968) was accompanied by delays due to lack of funding, but also because of the "movement 30 September", when the organization consisted of the Communist-minded officers tried to carry out a coup on the night of 30 September to 1 October 1965. The last stage of construction lasted from 1969 to 1976. The Museum added the diorama, and had to finish the remaining technical work at the Museum.

The official opening of the monument took place in July 1975. It is worth noting the fact that the architecture of the monument embodies the Hindu philosophy of the Ling and Yoni, the indivisible unity of male and female. The monument stands on a square platform, which is located inside the Museum. The Museum offers on display of around 50 dioramas depicting the history of the people of Indonesia. On top of the tower, at a height of 115 m, has an observation deck. On the North side of the monument is a statue of the Indonesian hero, Diponegoro.
