Basilica Of The Annunciation

Basilica of the Annunciation is one of two Christian churches in Nazareth, dedicated to this important gospel event. This temple belongs to the Catholic Franciscan order. According to Christian tradition it was here that the Archangel Gabriel appeared to the virgin Mary and announced to her the glad tidings that she would become the mother of the Savior of the world. According to legend this place was the house of the Holy Family.

Archaeological excavations have shown that in the early Christian era there was a house of worship iudeohristian. During the Byzantine era in the 4th century there was an altar in the Grotto of the Annunciation, also referred to the Church of the times of the crusaders. The temple was repeatedly destroyed during the raids of the Saracens and Muslim conquerors. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the revival of the temple, it was restored and rebuilt. Modern form it acquired in 1969.

Now it is a split level temple. Downstairs is the grotto of the Annunciation is a small cave where lived Mary, Joseph and Jesus. Over the altar a marble circle with the inscription "Here the Word became flesh" because this place was the virgin Mary when the Archangel appeared to her. The second floor has a staircase decorated with colorful stained-glass Windows. Up the whole East wall is a mural depicting Jesus Christ, symbols of the Holy Trinity, virgin Mary and Christian churches, ranging from the preeminent Apostle Peter and the popes to ordinary believers. The dome is made in the form of a white polyhedron, reminiscent of a Lily - a symbol of purity.

At the bottom of the gallery, outside and inside, around the perimeter is decorated with murals of the virgin and child. Gifts from different countries of the world, some of the picture the virgin has the appearance of the people who brought it as a gift. A number of panels made in an unusual technique.

The facade of the temple above the entrance is crowned by the figure of Jesus Christ. Below are images of the Archangel Gabriel and the virgin Mary, under them the four evangelists. The facade contains inscriptions in Latin, about the coming of the Saviour into the world, as well as quotations from the old Testament with the message of the coming of the Messiah. Doors leading to the temple were decorated with scenes from the gospel.

The temple is monumental and makes a majestic impression. You can also visit the Museum with archaeological finds discovered during excavations during the construction of the temple.
