Castello Maniace: photos, description (Castello Maniace)

Castello Maniace - old castle in Siracusa, situated on the promontory at the entrance to the city harbour. It was built by order of Emperor Frederick II in 1232-1240 years and was named in honor of George Maniac, the Byzantine commander, who in the 11th century conquered Sicily, expelling the Arabs. Today it is one of the most popular attractions of the city, attracting the eye with its decorated portal. Once it was reached via a bridge over the moat, but today it is covered.

I must say that the first fortified building on this spot was erected immediately after the capture of Syracuse, George Maniac in 1038. In the 13th century the castle is rebuilt by Riccardo da Lentini, and moved the king Pedro III of Aragon with the family. Almost two and a half centuries - from 1536 1305 for years it housed the residences of the Sicilian Queens. In addition, in the 15th century part of the castle served as a prison. Castello Maniace then became part of the fortified structures that protect the Harbor of Syracuse. And in the early 18th century it was restored and installed in this firearm.

In 1799, king Ferdinand III gave the famous Admiral Horatio Nelson the Duke for help in the bloody suppression of the popular uprising in Naples, and in the bargain - and the Castello Maniace. After the marriage of the Viscount of Bridport to the niece of Nelson, the building passed into the possession of the family of Bridport, which lived here until 1982. They sold the castle to the regional government. By the way, recently published a book by Michael Pratt, is dedicated to the Duchy of Nelson, - "Sicilian anomaly", which is mentioned and Castello Maniace.
