Collegiate Basilica of San Sebastiano, located in Piazza Leonardo Vigo Acireale is one of the most significant buildings in the city, built in the Baroque style, and certainly one of the symbols of the city. Until the 17th century Saint Sebastian was devoted to another Church of Acireale, which is considered today one of the oldest. However, in the beginning of the 17th century, it was not able to accommodate all believers, and in 1609, the year started construction of a new temple. The old Church was dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua.

The current building of Basilica San Sebastiano, declared a national monument, was substantially rebuilt after the terrible earthquake of 1693, the year. The Basilica's facade is made of white stone of Syracuse by architect Angelo Bellofiore (he helped students Diego and John Flavetta). In front of the facade are magnificent winding balustrade, built in 1756, the year Giovanni Battista Marina. You can see 10 statues of the heroes of the old Testament. To the right of the transept there is a statue of St. Sebastian, which is used in an annual religious procession.
