The national Park of Circeo is located on the promontory of Capo Circeo on the Tyrrhenian sea in the Italian region of Lazio. The Park was created in 1934 year on the orders of Benito Mussolini to protect the Pontine marshes. Interestingly, a few years earlier, in 1930 - it was Mussolini initiated the draining of these wetlands and reclamation areas. In 1939, the year of Italian paleontologists have discovered in one of the caves of Circeo perfectly preserved skull of a Neanderthal. Stones skull lying on the surface of the earth into a small lateral recess of the cave. Nearby was also found tools.

The total area of the Circeo national Park is 8.5 sq. km. It includes the coastal strip from the towns of Anzio and Terracina length of about 22 km of forest tract near San Felice Circeo, which is the largest forest valley in Italy, and the island Zannone, part of the Pontine archipelago and has retained its original vegetation cover.

Those Pontine marshes, for the sake of which the Park was created, composed of the four coastal salt lakes of Paola, Caprolace, Monaci and Fogliano. They are home to a vast number of species of birds found here are cattle egrets, cranes, geese, larks, Curlews and Lapwings, as well as the rare bog turtle. The maximum depth of the lake is about two metres and with the sea they are connected by a system of channels.

Also in the Park is part of the promontory of Capo Circeo, which gave the name to the whole Park. Its maximum height is equal to 541 feet above sea level. From a naturalistic point of view, the Cape can be divided into two zones: the Northern slopes are more humid climate and covered with dense thickets of Holm oak, white ash and birch, and on the southern slopes, where the climate is milder, there is the typical Mediterranean vegetation - Juniperus phoenicea, milkweed, samphire, rosemary, Myrtle. Here on the Cape, there is some interesting caves Grotta delle Capra, the grotto Dell Impiso, Grotta del Fossellone and Grotta Breil.
