Nature reserve Diaccia of Batroun: photos, description (Riserva naturale Diaccia Botrona)

Between Castiglione della Pescaia and Grosseto, near the pine forest and the famous beaches lies the natural reserve Diaccia of Batroun - moorland, about which few people know and which for centuries played an important role in the history and evolution of the Maremma. Despite the fact that today it takes much smaller area than in the past, and is surrounded by resorts and cultivated fields, it is a well-preserved portion of the coastal wetlands that have not been drained.

In fact, these marshes, once considered intimidating and unproductive place, are now the focus of environmentalists who teach us to appreciate the richness and importance of these ecosystems, such a rare quality these days. Their ability to absorb huge quantities of water during heavy rains, preventing, thus, devastating floods, and the ability to fill the underground layers is only part of the previously undervalued benefits of wetland ecosystems. In addition, on-site wetlands you can find a huge variety of species of flora and fauna - a true "genetic Bank".

March and September is, without a doubt, the best months to visit not only Giacca of Batroun, and other wetlands. In early autumn you can see flocks of migratory birds that are sent to spend the winter in warm countries, as well as those who remain on the Apennine Peninsula. October can offer the most magical landscapes, when the first rains and the signs of the approaching winter color wetland vegetation in the most unusual colors - here you can see the bright red Potashnik, purple tanning luxury root and asters. Winter Dacha of Batroun becomes a real Paradise for fans of birdwatching - so many birds to observe the daily life of those binoculars. And in the spring begins a new migratory season living in Il birds, various ducks and great egrets scurrying to and fro in search of food and shelter. Everywhere the voices of the rice-grackles, river larks and nightingales trying to attract a mate or defend their territory. In this period tourists need to be especially careful not to disturb the animals in their most sensitive period.

Summer is not the best time to visit Dacca of Batroun: scorching sun, stifling heat, mosquitoes can all ruin even the contemplation of the most beautiful scenery. But despite this, early in the morning or at sunset here can be in full harmony with nature and hear the sounds of the "swamp" of life - the shrill singing of the bittern, the rustle of lizards and snakes in the grass or just the swaying of the cane.
