Sant'angelo in Formis: photos, description (Sant'angelo in Formis)

Sant'angelo in Formis Abbey in the commune of Capua, located on the Western slope of the mountain Monte Tifata. Once it was known as the "hell of arkum Diane", which means "near the Arch of Diana" because it was built on the ruins of the Roman temple of Diana. Today this Abbey is considered one of the most important medieval monuments Campaign.

As mentioned above, the first Church on this place was built on the ruins of the temple of Diana in the 6th or 7th century. Later, it was attached to the monastery, now defunct. In the 11th century Church of Sant Angelo came under the control of the Abbey of Monte Cassino was rebuilt and re-embellished at the initiative of the Abbot Desiderius. However, the scenery of the portico date from the late 12th century.

The inside is done according to the plan of the Basilica, but no transept. Three naves divided by two rows of columns with Corinthian capitals and end with three semicircular apses. To the South of the Church stands the bell tower, the exact date of its construction is impossible to determine. And the facade of the Church is preceded by a portico with five arches.

Desiderius had close ties with the court of Constantinople, and therefore invited Byzantine artists to decorate the interiors of the Church. Unfortunately, from the mosaics to the present day, little has been preserved, we can only assume that they completely covered the walls of the building. On the tympanum over the main entrance, you can see the image of the Archangel Michael, who is dedicated to the Abbey, dressed in Byzantine garb. Above, the medallion is an image of the virgin Mary with two angels. There is also a picture of Christ sitting on a throne and holding the book in his hand. Scenes from the life of Christ are also found in the Central nave and the side chapels were decorated with scenes from the old Testament. The whole Western wall of the Church is occupied by the image of the last judgment.
