Church of the Madonna della Guardia: photos, description (Madonna della Guardia)

Church of the Madonna della Guardia, the official name of which sounds like Maria Santissima della Guardia, located in the Ligurian town of Alassio and is certainly one of its main religious sites worth visiting. She stands on top of mount Tirasso in the heart a kind of amphitheatre of hills surrounding Alassio. This ancient Church was built had given a vow of seafarers and fishers around 1200, the year in the ruins of a medieval castle, which at one time defended down to the plains. At the same place in Roman times there was a "Castrum", a military settlement in which lived the soldiers guarding held near the road. The original Church was called the Stella Maris - the star of the Seas.

The interior of the Madonna della Guardia, from the 18th century. The Church consists of three aisles, separated from each other by columns, and in the center of the apse is a revered marble statue of Heavenly Guard. In the chapel in the left side aisle you can see the wooden composition of the Madonna della Guardia, which appeared in 1490, the year on mount Figona in Genoa and is also revered by believers. Majestic marble altar of the Church dates back to the 17th century, and the whole vault of the Central nave was frescoed between 1859 and 1860 years artist Virgilio Graney. Special attention deserve the throne, solemnly standing in the center of the chancel, and mechanical organ of the 19th century. The Church itself is surrounded by a vast green Park that I like to visit the inhabitants of Alassio and tourists.
