Basilica of the Santissima Annunziata del Vastato: photos, description (Basilica della Santissima Annunziata del Vastato)

Basilica of the Santissima Annunziata del Vastato Cathedral in Genoa. His attire embodied the magnificence of the Baroque style of the 17th century.

Console Vastato in the name of the Cathedral is not accidental: when it was built it was located outside the city walls, in the area where homes and other buildings were demolished for defensive purposes. In Latin language the word "vastinium" is used to designate the runway safety.

The construction of the Cathedral began in 1520 monks of the Franciscan order in the place where once stood the small Church of Santa Maria del Prato. In 1537, the work was interrupted and resumed only in the late 16th century on the initiative of a family of Lomellini. Architect to complete construction was selected by Taddeo Carlone.

At the beginning of the 17th century a new Church was sumptuously decorated in the Baroque style by the architect Andrea Ansaldo, who was also responsible for the construction of the dome. The current neoclassical facade of the Cathedral was created in 1830-1840-ies Carlo B. Then in the second half of the 20th century in the walls of the Church restoration works were done, because the building was severely damaged during the Second World war.

Today inside the Church you can see works by such masters of world art as Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, Giovanni Bernardo Carbone, Valerio Castello, Giovanni Domenico Cappellino, Domenico Piola, Giovanni Lorenzo Enrique Bertolotti and Aurelio Lomi.

The dome is decorated with the fresco "assumption of the blessed virgin Mary" the work of Giovanni Andrea Ansaldo, and later restored Gregorio de Ferrari. Over the entrance from the nave is located the painting "the last Supper" Giulio Cesare by procaccini. All the 6 chapels of the Cathedral also painted many frescoes on religious subjects. In addition, inside you can see various sculptures of Madonnas and luxury Sauterne images.
