Basilica of Santo Stefano: photo description (Basilica di Santo Stefano)

Basilica of Santo Stefano, also known as "the Seven Churches" (Sette Chiese), a complex of religious buildings, located in the eponymous square in Bologna. According to legend, in the V century the city, Bishop Petronius ordered to erect on the site of the temple of the goddess ISIS Christian complex, which was to repeat the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem. Today, this Basilica can safely be called one of the most well-preserved playbacks of Jerusalem in Europe.

The exact date of construction of the Santo Stefano to install a difficult, but experts agree that the complex belongs to the early middle ages. So, Church. John the Baptist dates from the VIII century, and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre — V century. The portico, built in the XIII century and was known as the court of Pilate, acts as a liaison between the buildings and the Church of the Holy Trinity, also built in the XIII century. However, what tourists see today is, unfortunately, not the original view of the complex, and the result of numerous restorations carried out in the late XIX — early XX century.

The main Church of the complex is the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. It is a octagonal structure with 12 columns supporting a dome. 7 columns made of marble, 5 — made of bricks. In the center of the temple is edicola St. Petronius, however, the relics of the Saint are now kept in the Cathedral of his name. The most revered places of the temple are the source, which tradition associates with the waters of the Jordan, and stand apart from all the column of black marble, representing that on which they scourged Christ. It is likely that source, and the column was once part of the Roman temple of ISIS. In the XII century the walls of the Church was painted with frescoes, but today their fragments can be seen only in the Museum of the Basilica, as in the XIX century they were removed.

It's worth visiting the Church of the crucifixion of Christ, also located in the complex of Santo Stefano. The temple was built in the VIII century. In the presbytery, which is the Grand staircase, you can see the Crucifixion made in the XIV century by the sculptor Simone dei Crocifissi, and frescoes of the XV century. And in the crypt during the recent restoration work was discovered-preserved fresco of the XV century "Madonna della Neve".
