Desenzano del Garda is a picturesque resort town in the province of Brescia on the lake Garda. Dating to the 1st century BC, the territory of Garda, including modern Desenzano, has become a favorite getaway for wealthy residents of Verona, the chief city of the Roman Empire in the northeast of the Apennine Peninsula. But archaeological finds show that people lived here long before that: in the years 1870-1876 in the local peat bogs was discovered pots, dated to the bronze age.

In 1220 Desenzano del Garda, became a feudal possession of the family, Gonfalonieri, and later a theatre of war between the parties of Guelphs and Ghibellines. In the 15th century the city, like most other coastal settlements became part of the Venetian Republic. The next century was difficult for Desenzano, a lot of citizens died in the midst of the plague. Only in 1772 it became an independent commune, but soon became part of United Italy. Serious damage to the historical monuments of the city were used during the bombings in the Second World war.

Today Desenzano del Garda is popular with residents of southern European resort. Thousands of tourists come here to admire the views of the Alps and to soak up the three cleanest beaches in Desenzano beach, Spiaggia d'oro and the Port Rivoltella beach. In addition, the city with its many discos and pubs is the center of night life of southern Garda lake. And in the surroundings of Desenzano is home to several so-called pile dwellings, which is part of the UNESCO world Cultural Heritage site "Prehistoric pile dwellings of the Alps".

In the summer the calm waters of lake Garda around Desenzano offer tourists excellent opportunities for sailing, and the beaches are overcrowded.
