Big Almaty lake is a mountain lake located in the gorge of the river Big Almatinka, 28 km to the South from Almaty city. The lake lies in a hollow among the majestic mountain peaks. Above the lake rise the three main peaks - Tourist, lake and Advice. To the West from the peak Tourist is the crest of the Big Almaty peak (3 681 m), is well observed from the centre of the capital.

Big Almaty lake is part of the National Park and is the bowl depth of 40 m, a length of 1.6 km and a width of about 1 km. the Main source of the lake is glacier water. Depending on the time of year, the color in the high mountain reservoir varies from pale green to turquoise-blue.

As a highland lake, even in summer here is cool enough and the temperature of the water in the reservoir does not exceed 8ºC. But it is not a hindrance for people who even in the winter season fall in the icy lake water to shape and saturate your body with restorative energy.

To the mountain lake is a steep road, which originates at the source of the river Big Almatinka and leads towards the Eastern mountain slopes. The river flows into the reservoir and flows out. The lake is surrounded by truly wild and unusual beauty: glacial deposits, escarpments and slopes, cliffs and tranquil pine trees on the slopes of the Tien Shan.

Through the Big Almaty lake there is a pass that leads to a picturesque lake Issyk-Kul (Kyrgyzstan). Despite the steep slopes and difficult road, many tourists climb to the lake on foot, which allows them to fully enjoy the stunning nature and crystal-clear soft mountain air.
