One of the cultural heritage of the city is a Regional Russian drama theatre named after F. M. Dostoevsky. The theatre is located in the Central part of the city at the Astana square.

The theater was founded by the decision of the party and Komsomol bodies, in July 1937, taking into account the needs of the population and cultural growth, existing since November 1934 the theatre of working youth was reorganized into the regional drama theater. In 1975 upon the petition of the theatre, it was named after the great writer Fyodor Dostoyevsky. In 1977, the theatre received the regional status.

In all the years of its existence, the Russian drama theatre passed a long creative way. The theatre company worked actively during the war, in the difficult postwar years. In 70-80 of the theatre became a laureate of the international, Republican and all-Union festivals, which brought him great fame. On the stage are his performances of world classics as well as plays by contemporary playwrights.

Drama theater raised a whole galaxy of artists: people's artist of the CEB T. Zagvozdkina, Honored artists of the Kazakh SSR G. Christel, S. Popov, N. Buchanan, R. Markov, V. Sabirov and others.

Drama theatre named after Dostoevsky has successfully toured in Volgograd, Vladimir, Chisinau, Barnaul, Novokuznetsk, Biysk, Almaty, Karaganda, Pavlodar, Astana, Shymkent, bringing it everywhere good reviews of the audience and many awards. Today drama theatre continues its creative journey. Average and young generation of troupe continues the tradition of the theatre.

Each theatrical season is unique and unexpected. The main objective of the troupe is the widespread introduction of the audience to the best works of both domestic and foreign drama.
