Regional Kazakh drama theatre named after Zh. Shanin is one of the oldest theaters not only in Shymkent, but also throughout the Republic of Kazakhstan. The history of the theater began in 1934 when It was founded Chimkent regional joint drama.

In November 1967, the Chimkent regional Department of culture issued a decree on the division of the regional United drama in Kazakh and Russian. In total, the theater has 151 people. In April 2006 Director of the theater was appointed the honored worker of culture of the Republic of Kazakhstan B. Pirimbetov. Artistic Director of the drama theatre and the Director - people's artist of the Republic of Kazakhstan E. Urazymbetov.
The repertoire of the theatre consists of 30 productions both domestic and foreign classics, contemporary authors: M. Auezov "Kozy Korpesh - Bayan Sulu" by D. Isabekov "Akku announces cast", I. Saparbaev "Gypsy's Serenade" Aitmatov "Janfida" and many others.

The theatre actively participates in different festivals, and has repeatedly reached the highest peaks in the cultural life of the city. In 2001, the drama theatre toured in the Republic of Uzbekistan, and a year later participated in the X Republican festival of theatres in the city of Petropavlovsk with the play of G. Musrepov "Kozy Korpesh - Bayan Sulu". In 2003 the theater participated in the XI Republican festival in the city of Uralsk, which was dedicated to 200 anniversary of M. Utemisov, with performance I. IIP "I have spigen bar mA?".
