National Museum of natural history: a photo, description National Museum of Natural History)

National Museum of natural history, entertaining Museum in Luxembourg city. The Museum is located on the East Bank of the Alzette river in the Grund quarter near the Abbey of neumünster.

In 1850 on the initiative of the acting Governor of Luxembourg, Prince Henry had founded the Society of natural Sciences. In a short time in the disposal of the company provided part of the premises in the city Athenaeum, and it was here that in 1854 the first exposition of the Museum of natural history was presented to the public. After almost four decades, the Museum moved into the building, which previously housed the barracks of Vauban.

In 1922, the Government of Luxembourg adopted a decision on creation of the "State Museum" and purchased a mansion on the March-of-Poisson. The new Museum was supposed to be home for the collection of the Museum of natural history and the collection of antiquities, the collection of which was initiated by the "Society for the study and preservation of monuments of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg in 1845. Renovations dragged on for years and all this time the collection was inaccessible to the public. By 1940, the work was almost completed, but due to the invasion of German troops until 1946 (the Museum was not open.

In 1988, the "State Museum" was divided into two separate administrative units - the natural history Museum and the national Museum of history and art, and in 1990, the Luxembourg's Chamber of deputies decided to restore and to transfer to the Museum of natural history the buildings of the former hospice Saint-Jean. The official opening of the Museum took place in June 1996.

Excellent details collection of the Museum introduces its guests to such natural Sciences as botany, ecology, Geology and Mineralogy, Geophysics and astrophysics, palaeontology, and Zoology of vertebrates and invertebrates. For convenience and a better perception of the information the Museum exposition is divided into thematic sections.

In the natural history Museum regularly holds various temporary exhibitions as well as specialized lectures and seminars. Special attention the Museum pays to General education programs for students. Engaged in Museum research activities.
