The Cathedral of Acapulco

Photos and description

Among the sacral buildings of Acapulco special place is the Cathedral, consecrated in honor of the Mistress of Loneliness. The Spanish name of the Church sounds very poetic - the Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de La Soledad. Its amazing architecture immediately attracts attention. On either side of the main building are four majestic towers in the Byzantine style.

The history of the Church is very unusual and begins in 1555. Then on the site of the present Cathedral located on the main square of Acapulco, was built a small Church, which was loved by the townspeople. Over time it became dilapidated, and numerous earthquakes have contributed to its destruction. In the early XX century on a vacant lot built a massive Cathedral, which fell victim to the earthquake of 1909. Patient citizens again dismantled the ruins and for a time forgot about the improvement of the area. In the 30-ies of XX century the local authorities decided that the Old town needs a movie theater, so instead of sacred buildings on Zocalo square planned construction of an entertainment center. For some reason the mayor and his advisers had changed his mind, and here was built the present Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de La Soledad. The architect of the Church was appointed Federico Mariscal. In 1958, the Cathedral became the main Church of the Archdiocese of Acapulco.

Decorated in a romantic Oriental style, the temple is famous for its interior, which is dominated by gold and blue shades. Huge Windows with stained-glass Windows provide good lighting. In the bright sun rays especially interesting to look rich frescoes on the ceiling. The dominant feature of the temple is a glass sarcophagus, which placed a statue of Jesus Christ.
