In the mountains of Western Sierra Madre, in the Mexican state of Chihuahua, 5 km from the town of Creel is a beautiful arareco lake, surrounded by pine trees and quaint rock formations. This lake is in the shape of a horseshoe, was formed by the waters of two rivers. Its length is 3 km, and covers an area of 40 hectares.

In the past Arareko the pond was considered sacred to a tribe of Tarahumara Indians. They still live in natural caves on its banks. Nowadays, the lake is a popular vacation spot for Mexicans and for visitors to that state. I stop here a tour group. On the lake you can ride on the boat and participate in fishing. The lake shore has long been cultivated by people and improved. There are campsites, cottages, which are managed by local Indian community of the Tarahumara.
